herb picture_122109You flip on a channel and there’s a commercial for a popular oats brand claiming to reduce your cholesterol points if you take it for 30 days.  Then, a tuna advertisement comes on with the message that if you love life, eat tuna.  So what do oats and tuna have in common?  Omega fats.

Omega fats are fatty acids more popularly known as Omega 3-6-9 which are composed of molecular chains of oxygen, carbon and hydrogen.  The importance of the fatty acids depend on what is identified as bonding sites which allow the molecules attach to these acids.  The difference in the omega types lie on their molecular structure.  It is structure of the fat molecule’s bond that determines its components and health benefits.

Omega 3

  • Alpha linoleic acid or ALA is the most important molecule for Omega 3
  • Vital part of cell membranes
  • Acts as a building block for hormones responsible for blood clotting, contraction and dilation of arterial walls and inhibits swelling
  • Diminishes risk of coronary heart ailments and stroke
  • Affects eye and brain development
  • The human body  doesn’t produce ALA;  foods containing ALA should be included in the diet
  • Food sources:  Fish,  almonds, walnuts, flaxseeds, seafood, spinach, brussel sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage

Omega 6

  • Linoleic acid is the parent molecule of Omega 6
  • Diminishes risk coronary heart ailments
  • Reduces LDL cholesterol when used in place of saturated fats
  • Excessive intake may cause inflammation which increases CHD, cancer, arthritis, asthma and depression
  • Food sources: Foods cooked in vegetable oils like sunflower oil, soybean oil, canola oil and corn oil

Omega 9

  • The human body can manufacture Omega 9 from unsaturated fat
  • Lessens the possibility of cardiovascular disease and stroke
  • Beneficial in regulating blood sugar levels
  • Food sources:  Olive oil, canola oil, peanut oil, sunflower oil and animal fats

The right proportion of each omega acid is beneficial for the body.  The more natural the source, the better.
